Bob has worked in the building trades since 1973. He has worked in and on thousands of homes in the New River Valley during those 28 years. Inspector Bob thinks his past experience, and knowledge of the homes in the area, provide a good background for his career as a professional home inspector.

Before Bob became a home inspector, he was a master cabinetmaker, building and remodeling kitchens in the New River Valley for over 20 years. In 1994, an local newspaper article about a young couple who bought a house that literally was sinking into the ground provided the impetus for a career change. The couple could not afford to repair the house, nor could they sell it. Eventually, they lost the house and divorced. The reporter stated in the article, "If they had gotten a professional home inspection, they would have known about the foundation problems, and they could have avoided buying this home."

Providing professional home inspections seemed to be a necessary service, and an enterprise that would fit well with Bob's expertise and experience. By 1996, Inspector Bob had traded in his router and level for a moisture meter and an infra-red thermometer. An interesting side note: In Christiansburg, Bob inspected one home that had some unusual trimwork in the unfinished basement. That trimwork concealed evidence of extreme foundation settlement, just like the home in that 1994 newspaper article.

Bob has inspected more than 1500 homes in the New River Valley, and one home in North Carolina (for his daughter and son-in-law). He is a member of the American Society of Home Inspectors, the Piedmont Chapter of the American Society of Home Inspectors, and the Virginia Association of Real Estate Inspectors. He is also certified by the National Environmental Health Association as a Residential Measurement Provider for radon gas testing.
